What is ProCam? |
|
|
| |
ProCam
is a portable Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) that delivers high accuracy
(100 micron or 0.004” or better) measurements on parts from two to a hundred or more
feet in length. This unique, patented system uses “reverse” photogrammetry to
compute the position of the probe as it is moved freely through the measurement
volume. ProCam excels at measuring hard to reach points, is very user friendly
and is rugged enough for the most demanding environments. |

|
|
| |
Why invest in ProCam? |
| |
ProCam
system is a portable Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) that offers the
following advantages over other industrial measurement equipment: |
| |
 |
Ease of use. ProCam has been designed with ease of
use in mind, and is far easier to use than CMMs, laser trackers, and
measurement arms. ProCam is the true “point-and-shoot” of the industrial
measurement world. |
|
|

|
| |
 | Minimal setup time. The
system is available for measurement as soon as it is switched on.
|
|
| |
 |
Freedom of Movement. The
ProCam has no mechanical link to a measurement base. This allows the
operator to move freely throughout the measurement volume without wasting
time on instrument relocation. There is no bulky arm to manipulate,
and the instrument is totally handheld. No support stand is
necessary. |
|
|
|
| |
 |
Accessibility. There are a
wide variety of probe tips available for ProCam. This makes measuring
points that would be inaccessible to a CMM or require multiple relocations
of a laser tracker, very easy. |
|
|
 |
| |
 |
Flexibilty. Multiple
measurements stations can be set up on the manufacturing floor. A single
probe can be moved from one station to another as measurements are
required. There is little or no setup time and so the system is
operational within a couple of minutes. Multiple probe tips are
changed easily to handle a wide variety of measurement points. |
|
|
| |
 |
Targetless.
Unlike conventional industrial photogrammetry,
ProCam does not require that the object being measured has targets applied
to it. This reduces setup and tear down time. |
|
|
Measure anywhere on a surface while holding
the ProCam 3D measurement system in any orientation. |
| |
 |
Reduced training.
Typically two or less days of training are required.
Operation is intuitive. Once trained, operators retain their skills, even
if they do not use the system regularly. |

Interchangeable
probe tips allow easy measurement of complex surfaces and hidden points. |
|
What setup time/procedure is required for
ProCam? |
|
Probe positions are
determined by measuring optically coded targets on either a portable or
fixed panel. A portable panel allows for maximum mobility whereas a fixed
panel allows for optimal ease of use. |
 |
Fixed Panel.
If the user requires chooses to use a fixed surface such as a wall or
ceiling for the location of the targets, a quick onetime setup is required
which normally takes place during the installation and training. The
optical targets are placed on the wall or ceiling and them accurately
measured during the initial set-up to create a reference file. |
|
|
 |
 | Portable Panel.
The operator places the portable target panel in a
suitable location near the part. The panel is made of composite, and may
be ordered in 600 mm, 800mm or 1,200 mm sizes. The targets on
the panel have been very accurately pre-measured. Once the panel has been
clamped in position or secured to a tripod, the measurements can begin
immediately. |

|
What is the procedure for making
measurements with ProCam? |
The operator places a hand held probe at the desired
measurement point. When a trigger is activated, the
ProCAM's internal
camera immediately determines the probe location relative to the reference
location. A series of interchangeable probe tips makes it possible
to measure hidden points and even around corners. Results are
displayed on the integrated computer.
Since there is no targeting of the part, the
Pro-Cam
system is ready to use as soon as it is switched on.
ProCam provides complete freedom of movement around an object.
Unlike most other portable CMM's, you can measure all sides of an object without
relocation of the system. This increases speed and allows the system to
maintain a consistent accuracy range over the entire measurement volume.
|
The procedure...
-
The probe measurement tip is placed on the
point to be measured.
-
The probe/camera is
oriented to face the portable or fixed target panel.
-
The measurement is taken by pressing a
button on the probe/camera.
-
The three dimensional coordinates of the
measured point are immediately displayed on the computer screen. 3D coordinates can either be analyzed in the
Aicon 3D Studio software or can be sent to third party software.
Direct comparison of the measurements with a CAD model is possible
either in 3D Studio or in various compatible CAD packages.

| |
|
|
|
What is ProCam’s accuracy? |
The
accuracy of the system is better than 100 microns or 0.004” providing
the probe is closer than 1 meter from the reference panel. For large objects where the probe is 2 meters from
the reference points, accuracies of 200 microns or 0.008" are normal. The
accuracy of the Aicon ProCam System is not affected by
the size of the object being measured. Very large parts are measured by
targeting a long wall or by using multiple portable panels.
|
| |
|
|
|
Who uses ProCam? |
Some of the more common uses include:
|
 | Automobile Crash Test.
The most common ProCam application is pre- and
post-crash measurements of motor vehicles. This application requires the
ability to quickly measure points located anywhere on the vehicle. |
|
 |
|
 |
| |
|
|
 | Measurement of large welded
assemblies. The Aicon ProCam System is
used for dimensional control in the construction of buses and trailers.
The systems provides high accuracy measurements of very large parts and is
more economical and easier to use than competitive systems such as laser
trackers or articulated arms. |
